PETALING JAYA: DAP’s Dr Tan Seng Giaw, who was recently dropped as a candidate for the May 9 elections, is standing by his statement that the prime minister should not be held accountable for the dealings of state fund 1MDB.

He told FMT he was only pointing out what was written in the 2016 Auditor-General’s Report.

“The A-G’s Report has not been released to the public. Many people do not know its contents, so for them to comment is baseless,” he added. “I have read it many times.”

He said he could not comment further on the report as it was classified under the Official Secrets Act.

Tan, who was the Public Accounts Committee vice-chairman, had said Najib was not involved in 1MDB’s dealings as he was only the chairman of its advisory board.

He also said the correct thing to do was to go after “the board of directors and management, and those who ran the company”, who were “the people we have to probe”.

Prime Minister Najib Razak said yesterday that the DAP veteran had been dropped from the party’s Kuala Lumpur line-up for speaking “the truth” about 1MDB.

Tan has been dropped as the candidate for Kepong, a seat he had held for eight terms.

“This is what happens to someone who told the truth on 1MDB and refused to toe the party line,” Najib had said.

When asked if he agreed with Najib that he had been dropped due to his stand on 1MDB, Tan declined to comment, saying it was all speculation.

Tan was rumoured to have fallen out of favour with the party leadership because of his criticism of the Penang government in managing environmental issues.

His Kepong seat will be contested by Segambut incumbent MP Lim Lip Eng in the coming election. -FMT
