KUCHING: Sarawak police are actively gathering information to track down Facebook owners who slandered Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.

Sarawak Commissioner of Police Datuk Seri Amer Awal said the Sarawak Criminal Investigation department is working closely with Bukit Aman on investigations.

The police are investigating the case as defamation under Section 500 of the Penal Code and Section 223 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. So far, no arrests have been made.

The statement which defamed the Batang Sadong Member of Parliament has been uploaded on social media and is believed to be politically motivated.

Speaking to the media after the Sarawak police monthly assembly at the Sarawak Police Headquarters today, he said the police were taking the investigations seriously as this is not the first time that the FB owners have slandered the minister.

"There should be no compromise given to individuals who have been found guilty of this offence because it is capable of creating an environment of disharmony which conflicts with our culture. "

It is learned that the FB owners who used the name Lie Willes used the fake account to slander Nancy last week.

Meanwhile, in another development Amer said the Sarawak police are fully prepared for the 14th General Election to be held at any time.

He said 7,017 officers and members will be assigned to 31 parliamentary seats throughout Sarawak to ensure that campaigning and ballot moves are working smoothly.-NST
