Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nancy Shukri has called for a 30% quota for women when the Barisan Nasional (BN) and the opposition name GE14 candidates for the upcoming general election (GE14).

The Batang Sadong MP, from Sarawak, said she would like to see a new system where both sides of the political divide adhere to the quota for women candidates.

“We don’t have such a system yet in this country whereby both the ruling coalition and opposition must meet the quota.

“If BN fields a woman to contest in an area, the opposition should also send a woman candidate. I think this will empower more women to be great leaders in our country in the future,” Nancy said.

Speaking to reporters after a National Transformation 2050 (TN50) dialogue here today, Nancy said it was time more capable women are given a chance to represent the people in government.

“The field of government has been controlled by men because they are seen to be more ‘forward’ in this field. However, there are many capable women in politics.

“It’s up to the top BN leadership to decide on this but I feel that we have more women ready to be nominated as candidates (in GE14).”

Previously, in her New Year’s message, Nancy said she was not in favour of a quota for female senators as suggested by Prime Minister Najib Razak on condition that BN won GE14.

“Although I am not in favour of a quota (for female senators), nevertheless, we have to start with a figure which women ought to fill up in decision-making positions,” she said in her message.

Nancy had also said there were currently 24 women MPs in the Dewan Rakyat and she believed their numbers would increase this year.

“Let us see in the coming general election, how many women candidates will be nominated and how many will be voted in.”-FMT
