Attorney-General Mohamed Apandi Ali says he has had nothing to hide pertaining to the investigations into allegations made against state-owned investment firm 1MDB.

Denying accusations made against him by former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad at a ceramah in Shah Alam last night, the AG said he also did not fear anyone.

“I do not fear anyone including Mahathir.I don’t fear any human being but I do fear Allah.

“Whatever I do as the AG is all based on the available facts as contained in the investigation papers. There is nothing to hide,” Apandi told FMT in a text message today.

He was responding to a report on Mahathir declaring that the opposition coalition will haul up Apandi for questioning about the 1MDB scandal, in the event Pakatan Harapan wins the next general election (GE14) and takes over Putrajaya.

At his maiden speech as Pakatan Harapan chairman, Mahathir, at a “Love Malaysia, End Kleptocracy” campaign ceramah, claimed there were reports linking Prime Minister Najib Razak to the alleged embezzlement of funds from 1MDB, following investigations by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Bank Negara and the auditor-general.

But these reports, he alleged, were sealed under the Official Secrets Act (OSA), making it inaccessible to those without clearance.

“OSA doesn’t mean a criminal act can become an official secret. Hiding evidence of a crime is an offence. We will ask the attorney-general about this,” Mahathir said, referring to Apandi, who had previously cleared Najib of any wrongdoing over allegations related to 1MDB.

Najib has denied any wrongdoing and said the RM2.6 billion was a donation from a member of the Saudi royal family, to help Barisan Nasional’s campaign in the run-up to the last general election.

Apandi confirmed this last year, and cleared the prime minister.

Apandi replaced former AG Abdul Gani Patail in July 28, 2015.

The latter was said to have had his tenure as AG terminated effective the day before, due to health reasons according to Chief Secretary to the Government Ali Hamsa at the time.- FMT
