KUCHING : Sarawak has 157 Kemas kindergartens which are dilapidated and in sore need of repair and refurbishment, said state Welfare, Women and Community Wellbeing Minister Datuk Fatimah Abdullah.
So far this year, only six ramshackle kindergartens have been repaired and upgraded. Fatimah said the state government has selected five to six Kemas kindergartens for repair next year.
However, she added that refurbishment works on the pre-schools would depend on the federal government’s budget.
“The federal government has allocated about RM1 million for works to repair these kindergartens.
“(This is sufficient because) we do not want to build pre-schools that are costly. We want to repair these schools so that the children will have a conducive and safe learning environment,” said Fatimah after visiting a Kemas kindergarten in Taman Sepakat Jaya here today. - NST
