KUCHING: The Association of Malay Importers and Traders of Motor Vehicles Malaysia (Pekema) has its own strategy in facing the downward trend in the US dollar.
Pekema Sarawak president Datuk Abang Khalid Tan Sri Abang Marzuki said the impact and challenges were already felt even before the worrying expectation of the dollar to decline further in the next few months.
“In terms of sales and imports, we have already felt the effects from the devaluation of the US dollar. However, this does not only affect us, but also the whole global economy,” he told reporters at the ‘Pekema Foundation Sarawak Branch Hari Raya Aidiladha’ programme at RPR Demak Laut near here yesterday.
“We hope that it (US dollar) would not drop too drastically; otherwise, this would not just affect Sarawak, but also the rest of the world.”
Asked on Pekema Sarawak’s strategy, Abang Khalid said it would best to not announce it at the moment.
However, he did say that after making it through the 1998 economic downturn, the association should be able to handle the coming wave.
Pekema Foundation Sarawak yesterday donated 10 head of cattle for the Qurban (sacrifice) in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidiladha, of which the meat would be distributed to 12 villages under Demak Laut state constituency.
“Last year, we also presented 10 head of cattle for the Muslims in Samariang (constituency); this year, it’s Demak Laut. This is the second year that we are doing this and we hope to make this our annual programme, with different location each year.
“We aim to help the poor in other areas too,” Abang Khalid said, assuring all that even during this economic downturn, Pekema Sarawak would continue to run charity programmes.
Demak Laut assemblyman Dr Hazland Abang Hipni was also present yesterday. -BP
